Passus 18 of Piers Plowman features “Jesus…joust[ing]
in Piers’s arms,” (22) thus likening God’s assumption of human flesh to a
knight fighting in service of another, whose armor he wears. In your paper, discuss how Langland
invokes images of knighthood from the Old English, Norman-French, and Middle English
texts we’ve read and combines them with his representation of Jesus, especially
in the Harrowing of Hell passage.
What does Langland take from those older traditions? Does he alter or inflect them to work
with his religious subject matter?
